Nina Roz Criticizes Ugandan Feminists Over Silence on Barbie Kyagulanyi’s Reported Ordeal
Ugandan singer and activist Nina Roz has sparked a national conversation on the consistency of feminism in Uganda. This follows reports that Barbie Kyagulanyi, wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was allegedly subjected to physical and mental distress during a security operation at her home in Magere last week.
Reports indicate that during a forced search of the family residence, Mrs. Kyagulanyi was allegedly mistreated by security operatives. While details remain unclear, sources close to the family suggest she is currently still receiving medical attention.
“Feminism is Exposed”
Taking to her social media platforms, Nina Roz expressed her disappointment in women’s rights organizations and activists whom she claims have remained silent due to political leanings.
“Feminism in Uganda has been exposed, and it is ugly,” Nina Roz stated. “When Barbie Kyagulanyi was reportedly tortured and stripped of her dignity, many chose silence. Violence against a woman does not stop being violence because you dislike her husband or her politics.”
The “Kipande” singer compared the current silence to the historical courage of Ugandan icons like Miria Matembe and Winnie Byanyima, who were known for defending women’s dignity regardless of the political climate.
Nina Roz’s critique shows a growing concern in the Ugandan social sphere regarding “selective activism.” She argued that if activists cannot find their voice when a woman is allegedly brutalized by state actors, they risk being seen as complicit in the abuse.
Ongoing Situation…
At the time of this report, mainstream feminist organizations have yet to issue a formal collective statement regarding the incident in Magere. As the story develops, the public remains divided on whether activism in Uganda is losing its independence to political affiliations.
