Kanungu NRM Supporters Protest Against District Leadership Over Alleged Support for Independent Candidates

Kanungu.

Tension rose in Kanungu District today  as residents and supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) staged a demonstration, marching to the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to protest alleged misconduct by the district party leadership.

The demonstrators accused the Kanungu District Executive Committee (DEC), led by Mr. Caleb Kipande, of diverting funds and resources that were reportedly meant to mobilize support for official NRM flag bearers and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Protesters claim the resources were instead used to campaign for candidates contesting as independents and even aided independents on voting day.

According to the demonstrators, the alleged actions weakened party unity, confused supporters at the grassroots, and negatively affected NRM’s performance in the district.

They described the move as a betrayal of trust and an abuse of resources allocated to strengthen the ruling party.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the protesters demanded accountability, transparency, and immediate intervention by higher party authorities.

They also called on the RDC’s office to investigate the allegations and take corrective measures to restore discipline and confidence among NRM supporters in Kanungu.

The demonstration remained peaceful as security personnel monitored the march and later received a petition at the RDC’s office.

By press time, neither the Kanungu DEC leadership nor the RDC had issued an official statement regarding the matter.
