Gen. Muhoozi Says Baryomunsi Will Not Return to Cabinet After Social Media Clash
A fresh public spat between senior government figures has stirred debate after Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba suggested that Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance Minister Chris Baryomunsi will not return to Cabinet.
The remarks followed a radio interview in which Baryomunsi openly criticised the CDF’s use of social media. Speaking on Capital FM last Saturday, the minister said Gen. Muhoozi’s frequent tweets often complicate his role as the government’s chief communicator and overseer of national guidance. He argued that such public messaging makes it harder to maintain a clear and consistent government position.
Gen. Muhoozi responded swiftly and publicly, indicating that Baryomunsi would not be reappointed during any future Cabinet reshuffle. His comments immediately drew attention, given the sensitive nature of Cabinet appointments and the growing influence of social media in political discourse.
Baryomunsi did not stay silent. In a firm response, he dismissed the idea that his political future depends on favour or patronage. He said his rise in public life was driven by personal effort and ability, not by anyone’s goodwill. While downplaying the importance of holding a ministerial post, he stressed that serving Uganda goes beyond titles and offices.
The exchange has added fuel to an ongoing national conversation about the role of senior military officers in political debate, the power of social media in shaping public opinion, and the pressure faced by government communicators in an era of competing voices.
So far, neither State House nor the Office of the President has issued an official statement to clarify whether Gen. Muhoozi’s remarks reflect an official position on Cabinet matters. For now, Baryomunsi continues to serve as Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, even as public attention remains fixed on the unfolding tensions.
