By Our Staff Writer.
Kampala, Uganda – Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was officially nominated today, September 24, 2025, as a presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 general elections. The nomination of the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader was confirmed at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters.
Flanked by his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, and other top party officials, Bobi Wine addressed the media and his supporters after receiving his nomination certificate. In his speech, he reiterated his call for a peaceful transition of power and criticized the long-standing government of President Yoweri Museveni.
The nomination marks a significant step in the political journey of the musician-turned-politician, who has become a prominent figure in Uganda’s opposition. This will be his second time running for the presidency, following the contentious 2021 elections where he emerged as the leading opposition candidate.
Leading up to his nomination, Bobi Wine has been actively involved in various political activities. In June 2025, he formally submitted his expression of interest to be the NUP’s presidential flagbearer, signaling his intent to contest in the 2026 polls.
Throughout the past year, he has continued to advocate for human rights and political reforms in Uganda. His activities have included tours across the country to mobilize support, despite facing arrests and restrictions from security forces.
The political climate in Uganda remains tense, with Bobi Wine and his supporters facing significant challenges. His nomination sets the stage for what is expected to be a keenly watched and potentially turbulent election season.
