Carol Nantongo Opens Up on Why She Has Not Yet Chosen Motherhood.

Carol Nantongo says she is waiting to have children until she can fully support them financially, even if the father is not involved. She wants to ensure her future kids have a stable life and better opportunities than she had growing up.

Many female musicians in Uganda, such as Cindy, Vinka, Karole Kasita, Sheebah Karungi, and Martha Mukisa, have chosen to have children while continuing their music careers. Carol Nantongo, however, has decided to wait and has explained her reasons.

Nantongo revealed that she does not yet feel ready to have a child because she wants to be able to support a pregnancy and her future children financially. She wants to wait until she can take care of a child on her own if necessary, even if the father is not involved.

She said, “It is not that I do not want to have a child, but I want to wait until I can manage it financially on my own or with the father’s support. I will only become a mother when I can provide a stable life for my child.”

Having grown up with a single mother, Nantongo said she wants to give her future children a better life with opportunities she did not always have. She added that she is not rushing and will only start a family when the timing feels right.

I argue that her stance challenge the idea that motherhood is universal, and that kind of pressure only hurt womens. If we talk about choices we must include men responsibilites as well.

From the article we learn that she emphasizes autonomy, work ambition and personal readiness, which is a useful reminder that fertility choices are complex and vary across womens lives.
