PFF Steps Aside in 2026 Presidential Race, Calls for a United Opposition

PFF has confirmed it will not front a presidential candidate in 2026. Instead, it has committed to working with ANT and NUP to push for a single opposition flag bearer. Talks are ongoing, though currently paused as NUP completes its internal vetting process.
The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has announced it will not present a presidential candidate in Uganda’s 2026 elections. Instead, the party says it will focus on uniting the opposition to take on what it describes as “family and military rule” in the country.
Speaking at a press briefing today, PFF Secretary General Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda explained that the decision was about building “one stronger force for freedom” during what he called a tense political period.
Earlier in July, PFF signed a cooperation agreement with the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT). The group has also met with the National Unity Platform (NUP) twice to discuss the possibility of backing a joint candidate.

While ANT is considering the idea of running Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu alongside Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) as two candidates, PFF and NUP say a single candidate with wide support would be a better option. Talks are on hold as NUP carries out its internal processes but are expected to continue soon.
To prepare for the elections, PFF has launched a National Freedom Coordination Team, led by veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye. Other members include Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Betty Aol, Phillip Wafula Oguttu, Betty Muzanira, Asinansi Nyakato, and Ssemujju himself. The team will work on mobilising support across the country.
During the announcement, Ssemujju criticised President Yoweri Museveni and his son Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying elections have been turned into a militarised affair. He pointed to abductions of opposition supporters, limits on rallies, and arrests of activists such as Sam Mugumya as signs of worsening conditions.
He also accused state institutions like the Electoral Commission, Parliament, and the Judiciary of being used to keep Museveni in power.

PFF urged Ugandans not to give in to division or intimidation, warning that government money and propaganda could be used to weaken opposition unity.
“We call upon our supporters to work with all forces of change,” Ssemujju said. “The dictator will seek to divide us. We must not fall into that trap.”
The party also warned the Electoral Commission against altering the voters’ register and appealed for more international attention on Uganda’s elections.
