Breaking: NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro Abducted

KAMPALA, Uganda .

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has reported the violent abduction of its deputy spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro this afternoon.  NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, announced the incident on X, condemning the Museveni regime and calling for the immediate release of Mufumbiro. The abduction has reignited calls for justice and freedom under the hashtag #FREEUGANDA on X and facebook.

According to a statement posted by Bobi Wine on X, Mufumbiro was abducted by armed men in an incident described as a targeted attack. While specific details about the time and location of the abduction remain unclear, sources within the NUP indicate that Mufumbiro was taken by plain-clothed operatives, a tactic frequently associated with the government’s crackdown on opposition figures. The NUP has linked the abduction to a broader pattern of repression targeting its members, particularly as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.

“Just learnt of the violent abduction of our brother, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. Museveni and his criminal regime will eventually get what they’re looking for. #FREEUGANDA,” Bobi Wine posted on X, reflecting the growing frustration among opposition supporters.

Mufumbiro, a vocal critic of the Museveni government and a prominent figure in the NUP, has been a key advocate for political reform and a staunch supporter of Bobi Wine’s presidential ambitions. His abduction follows a series of similar incidents targeting NUP members, including the high-profile detention of Bobi Wine’s chief bodyguard, Edward Ssebufu (also known as Eddie Mutwe), Bobi Young, Bobi Giant and many others this year.

The Museveni government has not officially commented on Mufumbiro’s abduction. However, in previous cases, government spokespersons have dismissed similar allegations as “unsubstantiated” or accused opposition members of staging incidents to gain sympathy.

The government has also faced criticism for its handling of opposition figures, including the abduction of veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2024, which sparked a diplomatic row between Uganda and Kenya.

Mufumbiro’s abduction comes at a time of heightened political tension in Uganda. The NUP has been vocal in its criticism of Museveni’s 39-year rule, accusing the government of corruption, electoral fraud, and human rights abuses.
