Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has told Ugandans not to expect any change of government in next year’s presidential elections.

Speaking to health workers and local leaders in Kayunga District last week, Ms Nabbanja said she is confident President Museveni and the ruling NRM party will remain in power.

“I hear Opposition supporters talking about change in the upcoming election. Let me tell you the hard truth, I don’t expect any change,” she said.

Uganda will hold elections early next year. Many in the Opposition hope for a new leader after nearly 40 years of Museveni’s rule. But Nabbanja dismissed those hopes, saying Museveni’s rivals are “not strong enough.”

She praised NRM supporters in Kayunga, pointing to projects like Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital as benefits of voting for the ruling party. She argued that areas represented by Opposition leaders, like Mukono Municipality under MP Betty Nambooze, have missed out on similar projects.

“Look at this hospital, it’s one of the best in the country. You have it because you voted for NRM leaders,” she told the crowd.

Since 1996, the Opposition has tried several times to unseat Museveni through elections but he has always been declared the winner by the Electoral Commission.

Meanwhile, the electoral roadmap shows that all eight presidential candidates start their campaigns today. The campaigns are expected to last about three months before the country heads to the polls.
