EC Unveils Official Party and Independent Candidate Symbols Ahead of 2026 Elections

KAMPALA. The Electoral Commission has published the official register of political parties and their symbols, marking a major step towards the 2026 General Elections. The announcement was made on the Commission’s official platforms and comes as parties and independent candidates start preparing for the nomination process.

Under the guidelines, independent candidates will have to select from a list of EC-approved symbols. These symbols will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, making early preparation crucial for anyone hoping to stand out on the ballot. Meanwhile, party flag bearers will use their officially registered party symbols.

Uganda’s political parties are governed by the Political Parties and Organizations Act of 2005. The law, which was introduced after the country returned to the multiparty system, sets out rules for registering, regulating, and running political parties. It also ensures that independent candidates can participate in elections, giving them a clear path to present themselves to voters.

Analysts say that the availability of approved symbols for independent candidates is a key development. It allows individuals without party backing to establish their identity and appeal to voters, which could make the 2026 elections especially competitive.

The Electoral Commission has encouraged all aspirants to inspect the register ahead of the nomination process. Accuracy and familiarity with the list are critical, especially for independents who need to secure symbols quickly in order to avoid disappointment.

The release of the register comes as political parties intensify their mobilization efforts across the country. For independent candidates, it is a moment to weigh options and strategize. With the elections drawing closer, all eyes will be on how these preparations shape the race for the presidency, parliamentary seats, and local government positions.

Independent candidates will be required to select from this list of EC-approved symbols.
