The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has raised alarm over what he calls a fresh wave of abductions and arrests of his party members across Uganda.
In a statement shared on Saturday through his social media pages facebook and X, Bobi Wine claimed that armed soldiers arrested NUP activist Calvin Tasi, popularly known as “Bobi Giant,” outside a soft drinks factory in Kawempe. Witnesses said he was bundled into a “drone” and driven away.
Bobi Wine also reported that in Katakwi District, police detained several key NUP leaders. Among them were Okware Jonathan, the party’s coordinator for the Teso sub-region, and Toroma County chairperson Ijonai Juventine. They were being held at Katakwi Central Police Station by Saturday evening.
The opposition leader (Bobi Wine) listed more cases of arrests from different parts of the country. In Mityana District, NUP’s head of Mobilisation, Buwembo Habib, was allegedly arrested during a party activity. In Mbarara City, Richard Kavuma, also known as Pastor RK Madogo, was reportedly dragged off the streets. And in Mbale, Bobi Wine said, several party leaders, including the Bugisu sub-region coordinator, were picked up after celebrating their nomination as NUP flagbearers.
“These actions show a calculated scheme to silence NUP supporters everywhere,” Bobi Wine wrote, adding that the claims by security operatives that the arrests were lawful were “false.”
NUP has long accused President Yoweri Museveni’s government of harassing opposition politicians, especially as the 2026 elections draw closer. The government, however, has denied these accusations. President Museveni has insisted that the work of security forces is to maintain peace and order, not to target political opponents.
The situation has left many young Ugandans asking difficult questions: Are these arrests part of normal law enforcement, or are they signs of growing political tension in the run-up to 2026?
For now, NUP supporters say they will not be silenced. As one student in Kampala put it after reading Bobi Wine’s statement online, “We just want a fair chance for everyone to speak and campaign freely.”
