Collins Tanga, son of the National Resistance Movement Electoral Commission chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, has rejected a tribunal ruling that annulled his election as Chairperson of the NRM Youth League.
The tribunal, which was tasked with investigating complaints from the August 2025 Youth League polls, declared Tanga’s win null and void on September 8, citing irregularities and conflicts of interest. Tanga had initially been announced the winner with 1,567 votes, narrowly beating rival Brenda Kiconco, who secured 1,355 votes.
Kiconco and other candidates raised concerns over the conduct of the elections, pointing to procedural flaws and alleging nepotism, as the polls were overseen by Collins Tanga’s father.
In its ruling, the tribunal, chaired by John Musiime with members Diana Kasabiti and Esau Isingoma, highlighted several issues. Some candidates were excluded from the ballot or declared withdrawn without their consent. The tallying process contained discrepancies, and the records were found unreliable. The tribunal also pointed to Dr. Tanga Odoi’s direct involvement in presiding over the elections, signing documents, and announcing his son as the winner as a clear conflict of interest.
The tribunal further criticized the timing of the election, which was scheduled at 4:00 a.m. after multiple postponements, saying it undermined transparency. Collins Tanga’s age of 31, though within the NRM youth bracket of 18 to 35, was found to conflict with the National Youth Council Act, which caps youth leadership at 30.
On this basis, the tribunal nullified Tanga’s victory and ordered fresh elections. It also directed that Dr. Tanga Odoi must not take part in organising or overseeing the rerun.
Collins Tanga, however, dismissed the ruling, insisting that his win was legitimate.
