The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Aisha Batala Naluzze, has confirmed that her office has launched investigations into allegations against Speaker Anita Annet Among following a petition filed by lawyers and civil society activists over alleged breaches of the Leadership Code Act.
Speaking on the matter, Naluzze said the Inspectorate had received the petition and commenced inquiries into the claims raised against the outgoing Speaker. She noted that the findings of the investigation would be made public once the process is concluded.
The IGG also encouraged Ugandans to continue reporting suspected cases of misconduct, unexplained wealth and extravagance involving public officials, saying public participation remains vital in promoting accountability and transparency.
The petition, formally submitted on Wednesday, accuses Among of allegedly failing to fully declare her assets, wealth and liabilities as required under the Leadership Code Act.
According to the petitioners, the Speaker may have either under-declared or failed to declare portions of her wealth, prompting calls for a detailed investigation by the Inspectorate of Government.
“We accordingly lodge this complaint regarding failure to declare and/or under-declaration of wealth by Among, and hereby request you, as provided for under Section 22 of the Leadership Code Act, to furnish us with her declaration, if any,” part of the petition reads.
One of the petitioners, Kato Tumusiime, said the group voluntarily filed the complaint after developing concerns that the Speaker’s declarations may not fully reflect her known assets.
The development adds to growing public scrutiny surrounding accountability and compliance with leadership regulations among senior government officials, with the IGG’s office expected to determine whether any violations of the law were committed.
