KANUNGU – Francis Kapesha was on Monday sworn in as the new Kanungu District LC5 chairperson after winning the January district elections under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket.
Kapesha officially assumed office on May 19, succeeding former LC5 chairperson Sam Kajojo, who vacated the seat to contest for the Kinkizi East parliamentary position, although his bid was unsuccessful.
The swearing-in ceremony attracted several political leaders and residents, with former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi serving as the chief guest.
Kapesha’s journey to the district’s top political office followed a highly contested NRM primary election in which he faced off with Kibesigwa Justus, commonly known as TJ. TJ had earlier gained political attention after defeating Caleb Kipande in the NRM primaries.
Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office, Kapesha pledged to focus on service delivery, infrastructure development and unity among residents of Kanungu District.
He thanked voters for entrusting him with leadership and called on political rivals and supporters alike to work together for the district’s progress.
Leaders at the event praised the peaceful electoral process and urged the new administration to prioritize accountability and development programs aimed at improving livelihoods in the district.
