Government to launch consultations on new poverty reduction strategy for Karamoja

The Ugandan government will begin consultations within the next two weeks to develop a new strategy aimed at reducing poverty and improving livelihoods in the Karamoja sub-region, officials said, as authorities seek fresh approaches to address persistent development challenges.

Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Esther Anyakun said the consultation process will bring together government agencies, development partners, local leaders and other stakeholders to design a comprehensive plan tailored to the needs of communities across the region.

According to Anyakun, the discussions are intended to move beyond short-term interventions by identifying practical and sustainable solutions that can improve household incomes, strengthen economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Karamoja has for years remained one of Uganda’s most disadvantaged regions, facing high levels of poverty, food insecurity, climate-related shocks and limited access to essential services. While government and humanitarian organizations have implemented a range of development programs, many communities continue to struggle with recurring economic hardships.

Officials say broad stakeholder participation will help ensure the new strategy reflects local priorities while aligning government efforts with support from development partners and the private sector.

Anyakun said the government is committed to pursuing a coordinated approach that addresses the underlying causes of poverty rather than isolated challenges. She expressed optimism that the consultations would produce practical recommendations capable of creating lasting improvements in livelihoods across the sub-region.

The planned engagements are expected to shape a new roadmap for Karamoja’s development, with the government aiming to accelerate economic resilience and expand opportunities for communities that have long faced barriers to sustainable growth.
