Northern Bypass rehabilitation completed as ministry prepares to reopen key Kampala road section

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the completion of rehabilitation works on the Kampala Northern Bypass, marking the end of a major phase of road improvements aimed at easing traffic flow on one of the capital’s busiest transport corridors.

In a statement issued Monday, the ministry said asphalt laying along the bypass had been completed, bringing the rehabilitation works to full completion.

The ministry added that the Namungoona to Bwaise section would reopen to motorists by 10 a.m. after the contractor finishes removing construction equipment and clearing the work site.

The reopening is expected to bring relief to thousands of commuters and businesses that have endured months of traffic disruptions, diversions and longer travel times while the road underwent repairs.

The Kampala Northern Bypass serves as a critical link for motorists traveling around the city, connecting major highways and reducing congestion within the central business district. Its rehabilitation forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and support the efficient movement of people and goods.

Officials said the completion of the asphalt works represents a significant milestone in restoring normal traffic operations along the corridor. Drivers have been advised to exercise caution as traffic resumes and to follow guidance from road authorities during the transition period while the contractor completes final site clearance.

The Ministry of Works said the Namungoona to Bwaise section would be reopened once all machinery and equipment had been fully demobilized from the construction site.
