FUFA inspects Hoima facilities as Uganda prepares for AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Uganda’s football leadership has stepped up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations by inspecting Hoima City Stadium and Kabalega International Airport, facilities expected to play a central role in the country’s hosting plans.

FUFA President Moses Magogo, who also serves as vice chairperson of the AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee, led a two day inspection of the sites alongside a delegation from the federation. The visit was aimed at evaluating whether the facilities are on track to meet Confederation of African Football requirements before the qualifying matches begin in September 2026.

At Hoima City Stadium, the team reviewed key areas needed for international competition, including the pitch, dressing rooms, floodlighting, media facilities, spectator sections and access routes to the venue. The delegation also toured Kabalega International Airport, which is expected to handle the arrival and departure of players, match officials and supporters during the tournament period.

Speaking after the inspection, Magogo commended the pace of construction and expressed optimism that Hoima would be ready to host Uganda’s international fixtures.

“It has been a fruitful assessment period. The Government has done a great job here in Hoima. We shall align with all key stakeholders because we have a dream to host all our qualifiers here in Hoima,” he said.

The inspections come as Uganda continues preparations to co host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania, marking the first time the tournament will be staged in East Africa.

Although the three host nations have already secured automatic qualification for the finals, they are still required by CAF to take part in the qualifying campaign. The matches are intended to keep the host countries match fit and competitive ahead of the tournament.

Uganda Cranes have been drawn in Group G with Tunisia, Libya and Botswana for the qualification campaign.

FUFA has identified Hoima City Stadium as the preferred venue for Uganda’s qualifying matches, provided the facility satisfies CAF’s final inspection and certification requirements.

The continued development of the stadium and supporting infrastructure reflects Uganda’s broader effort to leave a lasting sporting legacy beyond the continental tournament. Officials say modern facilities are expected to boost local football, attract future international events and stimulate economic activity in the Albertine region through tourism, transport and hospitality.
