UPDF Troops Kill Senior Al-Shabaab Commander in Somalia

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have scored a major victory against terrorism after killing a top Al-Shabaab commander in the Lower Shabelle region.

The militant, Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, who was widely feared as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was ambushed and killed by UPDF troops near Buulomareer on 14 September 2025. His death is being described as a huge setback for the extremist group that has long terrorised communities in Somalia.

Sector One Commander Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga praised the soldiers based at Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB) for what he called a decisive strike. “This operation has dealt a serious blow to Al-Shabaab,” he said.

The UPDF also recovered several items from the slain commander, including a pistol with three loaded magazines, binoculars, a porch, and two mobile phones.

Brig Gen Ssemwanga assured the soldiers that AUSSOM, together with UPDF leadership and international partners, is fully committed to dismantling terrorist networks and helping Somalia return to peace and stability.

Maj David Ogweng, the commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, expressed his gratitude to Brig Gen Ssemwanga for his support and guidance, which he said played a key role in the success of the mission. “We remain determined to fulfil our duties and ensure peace and security in Somalia,” Maj Ogweng said.

The Sector One Commander also used his field visit to check on other forward bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn. His inspection focused on the readiness of troops, their living conditions, and welfare. He was joined by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, who heads logistics and engineering for the contingent, along with other commanders in charge of explosive disposal and women’s affairs.

For Uganda, which has contributed soldiers to Somalia for nearly two decades, the killing of Amiir highlights the sacrifices and achievements of troops working far from home. For the people of Somalia, it offers renewed hope that one of the most dangerous militant groups in Africa is losing ground.
