Bobi Wine urges public officials to protect their integrity after UHRC chairperson’s resignation

National Unity Platform President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has urged public servants to uphold their integrity, saying positions in government are temporary but the reputation built through public service lasts long after officials leave office.

Kyagulanyi made the remarks following the resignation of Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson Mariam Wangadya, saying her departure should prompt reflection among those entrusted with public office and decision-making.

He said public officials have a responsibility to exercise their authority with fairness, accountability and respect for the people they serve, regardless of the political environment in which they operate.

According to Kyagulanyi, leadership should be measured not only by the offices people occupy but also by the principles they uphold while in those positions. He said every decision made by public servants contributes to the legacy they leave behind.

The opposition leader argued that while appointments eventually come to an end, an individual’s character and public record continue to shape how they are remembered by future generations.

His comments come at a time when public institutions in Uganda continue to face scrutiny over governance, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights. Political leaders across the spectrum have frequently called for stronger ethical standards within public service.

Kyagulanyi said Wangadya’s resignation should remind officials that public office carries significant responsibility and that integrity remains one of the most valuable assets any leader can preserve throughout a career in public service.
